There is a sense that part of retreating at Hollis can include doing a service projects. We welcome your active support of Hollis through volunteer efforts. In that, work and spirituality are intertwined. We’re always looking for skilled, insightful volunteers for such administrative opportunities as serving on our board or participating in committees and task groups.

  • Office support, such as helping prepare mailings is also welcome.
  • Site opportunities abound, including work on the trails, building upkeep with our weekly crew of volunteers, wood cutting, caring for our wild-flower garden and so on.
  • Scout Projects:  Hollis has been the site of numerous Eagle projects, overseen by capable and experienced volunteers.
  • Retreat Programs: Want to develop retreats or environmental programs? We welcome program ideas and facilitators. Artists and artisans are welcome to use our site for workshops, as are writers.
  • Hospitality Opportunities: Hollis offers many hospitality opportunities, such as hosting events or assisting with food and preparation. Such volunteers could also guide tours, or serve on a speaker’s bureau to tell the Hollis story.
  • Youth & Adult Group Opportunities are abound  to find rewarding volunteer experiences.

Volunteer Day

"Work is the friend of the soul."
St. Benedict, RB 48.1

The Thursday Volunteer crew meets every week as a facet of Hollis Community. There is plenty of work to be done and we share a meal together at noon. The Thursday morning team works hard on challenging on-going maintenance and capital improvements. After the work is done, the spirit of community at Hollis is shared with a mid-day meal where workers get a chance to relax and share fellowship. Bring a hardy work spirit and appetite, and the rest will be provided. A Saturday Volunteer crew is also getting started. They continue the work on Thursdays but they also work with the many groups that volunteer at Hollis on the weekends. Contact Hollis if your group would like to volunteer.

There are three principles to the Thursday Volunteer Community:

  • Vocation: being called to what we do.
  • Stewardship: taking care of what is given; and
  • Obedience: serving one another.

What happens on Thursdays?

  • 9:00 AM - Volunteers arrive
  • 9:15 AM - Assign tasks
  • 11:45 AM - Lunch and Devotions at the Lodge
  • 1:00 PM - Resume activities or leave
